lecture: 'Radical Urban Ecology'
Art Center College
of Design (1700 Lida Street; Pasadena)
info: 626-396-2446
detail: The
departments of Environmental Design and Liberal Arts & Sciences present
the Radical Urban Ecology of English Artist Nils Norman. Nils Norman’s
work is informed by local urban politics and ideas on alternative economic
and ecological systems that work within the city, merging urban, utopian
alternatives with a humorous critique of the history and role of public
art. His work often takes the form of fictive proposals that critically
highlight what city design and public sculpture mean in terms of their
participation in the process of gentrification of city space and its exclusionary
nature. The proposals reveal the processes used by corporate and private
interests to control and redefine public space for private ends. Mr. Norman’s
recent projects include doing photography and research of Adventure Playgrounds
in Europe and the United States to create the book “An Architecture
of Play: A Survey of London’s Adventure Playgrounds.” All
are invited to his presentation.
